I am the horse in the Cairo square

I am a tall chestnut, slender in the legs

Clopping wildly

Down the modern pavement

Of the ancient city.

Ridden rough

Handled rudely

By a rider spreading fear

And afraid himself.

Suddenly I was alone

Dancing away and then held

By hard-eyed men

Who beat and bloodied

The heavy shouldered thug

Who kicked me…

One time too many.
